At 12:14 CST, 10/4/2010 our datacenter experienced a complete outage lasting approximately 90 minutes, this resulted in the sites being unavailable. Sites are now back up and functioning normally. Apologies for the inconvenience.
Update 9/26/2010 7:33PM CST: The server move has been completed. The old server will remain online to ensure no downtime for uploaded images while people’s DNS cache updates to the new server IP. I am thoroughly testing the site on the new server, no data or images were lost during the move. If you experience any issues with the site please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
UploadScreenshot has seen a massive growth in usage, with over 300,000 image loads in the past 24 hours. This amount of usage is putting a large amount of strain on the shared hosting account that the site is currently on. A dedicated server was built last week and is now racked at the datacenter. The new server is equipped to handle millions of daily image loads, and will accommodate our growth for a long time to come.
I will be performing a move of the site to the new server sometime this weekend. I will update this post when the move is complete!
While the site has been running OK these past couple of weeks it definitely has not been as snappy and responsive as I would like it to be. I’ve just ordered the parts to build a more powerful server which will speed things up and be able to accommodate much more growth. The database will move to it’s own SSD drive allowing much faster MySQL performance (and hence page loads), and the image data will be stored on a faster drive configuration.
I expect to build the server and have it racked by September 24th, at which point I will make another blog post to detail the transition plan. The server move will involve zero downtime for uploaded screenshots but may disable the upload ability for a few minutes to up to an hour.
Thanks for using the site, if you have any feedback you can email me at email@example.com!
So much to do, so little time! I’m looking for someone to port the UploadScreenshot.com Firefox Addon ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/14922/ ) over to the Google chrome browser. Not only will you be helping our free site grow, giving you a tingling feeling inside, but we’ll pay you $500 on completion.
Contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you’re interested in doing this!
I just moved UploadScreenshot.com to a new server. No downtime for images was experienced, but we did have to disable the upload feature for about 10 minutes. A copy of the site with the upload disabled remains on the old server so that users whose DNS takes a while to update will not see any broken images, but won’t be able to upload. TTL was set very low a couple of days ago, so this shouldn’t really affect anyone as the DNS records on the original nameservers have been updated with the new IP.
The new server will allow us plenty of room to grow over the next few years. If you notice any problems please shoot me an email: email@example.com.
I had forgotten to set the max memory limit in PHP on the new server hosting PutPic, PutPhoto, and UploadScreenshot. This resulted in high resolution images failing to upload, but has now been corrected.
Sorry for the inconvenience, hopefully this is the last hiccup due to the move!
