Sites Moved

leave a comment »

PutPic, PutPhoto, UploadScreenshot and our other sites have been successfully moved with no data loss from our previous datacenter in the UK to a location in the USA.

Some users may of experienced the inability to upload during the past 24 hours while DNS propagated, but all functionality should be back to normal now. Let me know if you have any problems.

Thanks for sticking with us through this, the new location will allow us to grow much more easily as we have a full rack of space and our own hardware.

UploadScreenshot Downtime This Morning 2/21/10

leave a comment »

Unfortunately we experienced some downtime for UploadScreenshot.com this Sunday morning between 2AM and 6AM GMT. Our datacenter experienced an AC failure causing the temperature to rise too high for server operations. This had me somewhat baffled as the datacenter is located in England and it was 0 degrees Celsius outside at the time of the event, surely some doors could have been opened and some large fans put in place to resolve the situation.

Regardless, this outage along with a few several hour interruptions over the past few months are reason enough for us to relocate the site. We had actually made the decision to move a couple of months ago, due to other outages, and already have a new co-location facility racked with new hardware. We will be migrating the data carefully over the next couple of weeks to ensure a successful move, with zero downtime.

This will involve:

  • Setting up a new img subdomain for future uploads at the new location.
  • Setting up the database at the new location, and changing the www subdomain DNS to point to the new location.
  • Wait 48 hours for DNS propagation.
  • Setting the www subdomain at the old location to redirect to the new location IP address.
  • Setting the old img upload subdomain to redirect all new uploads to the new img upload subdomain.
  • Setting the code on the www subdomain so that uploads to go to the new location on a new img subdomain.
  • Mirror images from the original img subdomain (img1) to the new location.
  • Change DNS so that img1 points to the new location.
  • Waiting 72 hours.
  • Delete all content off of old servers.

I apologize for the downtime that happened this morning, I would also like to assure you that we have nightly backups of all data stored at remote locations. We are as best prepared for such outages as feasible for running a free site and expect to maintain 99.9% uptime for the year as planned.

I hope this addresses any concerns that you may of had regarding the outage.

Regards,
Gordon
